Solar Eclipse April 8, 2024

Larned is set to experience the wonder of a partial solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. This event, where the Moon partially covers the Sun, will transform day into a brief dusk.

We are thrilled to offer our students the chance to safely experience this astronomical event. Select classes at our schools have chosen to view the eclipse outside, and each student participating will need to wear regulated solar eclipse glasses to prevent eye damage. Thanks to generous donations from Sonic, the Fort Larned Lions Club, Kappa Psi Sorority, and Off Broadway Boutique, we have extra glasses available. However, if your child has regulated eclipse glasses that they can bring from home, please have them bring them to school tomorrow, Monday, April 8, for the eclipse event to make sure we have enough for everyone.

Protecting our eyes is so important during this rare occurrence. We advise everyone to have discussions at home about using proper eye protection for viewing the eclipse. For comprehensive safety advice, please refer to NASA’s eclipse viewing guidelines.

The eclipse will be visible in Larned from 12-3 pm. Please note that everyday sunglasses do not protect eyes for eclipse viewing and could result in permanent eye damage.

More about Eclipse Day:

  • NASA Live Coverage: Immerse yourself in the astronomical event by watching NASA’s live stream of the eclipse from 12-3 p.m. CST on NASA TV, NASA.gov, the NASA app, and YouTube.

  • School Viewing Options: Only select classroom teachers have chosen to participate in outdoor viewing sessions. If your child’s class is participating and you prefer they not join the outdoor viewing, please return the opt-out form by Monday morning, April 8

A paper copy of the opt-out form should have been sent home with your student on Friday if their class is going outside during the event. Click here to access the digital version of the form, which you can download and print if it has been misplaced.

Thank you for your partnership in keeping our students safe and making this educational experience possible!
