Larned High School partial reroof project will be getting underway in the next couple of weeks. The project will consist of removing the existing roof on about 2/3 of the school facility. A new tapered insultation will then be added to the roof to help with drainage to our roof drains. This will help to eliminate water pooling in spots on the roof moving forward. Then a new 20-year warranty roof membrane will be added to the facility. Upon the job starting our contractor has indicated that the work should be completed in 5-6 weeks.
The USD 495 Board of Education approved the bid for this project at the May 2022 board of education meeting. The board approved the bid from Roofmasters in the amount of $589,245. Based on estimated time frame to obtain all materials, the project was expected to start 6-7 months after approval. The replacement of this section of our roof membrane at LHS was identified as part of our capital improvement plan. After the completion of this project, Larned High School will have replaced the majority of the facilities roofs in the last 5 years. The replacement on these roofs were identified by our roofing assessment as being worn/damaged and replacement recommended. The only remaining section of roof at the high school is considered fair and is scheduled for replacement on our capital improvement plan in fiscal year 2025.
As this project begins, we want students, staff and patrons to be aware that it might result in sections of the high school parking lot being sectioned off for equipment and materials. Workers will be on the job site during school hours and on the roof completing the project. This will result in some additional noise during the school day. The positive is that 3 weeks of the project will be completed during our winter break. As this project will create some disruptions over the next few weeks, once completed we will have eliminated our leaking roofs. This helps to reduce impact and damage to other materials in the interior of our building.
The estimated start date is December 12, 2022. If we have any additional updates throughout the project, we will release those immediately.
