In 2013, Larned honored Gene Keady by naming a street after him—Keady Way, near Moffet Stadium. Reflecting on his roots, Gene said, “I am very humbled. I spent a lot of time on this field (Moffet). Sports in Larned kept me out of trouble. It was a great place to grow up. I appreciate this and I’ll never forget it."

Congratulations to the LMS 7th grade girls for their 27-15 win vs. Hoisington. With the victory, they finished undefeated for the basketball season! In addition, the 8th grade boys also won 39-19 tonight at Hoisington!

In his 25 years as Purdue’s head coach, Gene Keady led his team to 6 Big Ten championships and 18 NCAA tournaments. He was named National Coach of the Year 6 times and is in the NJCAA Hall of Fame, Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, and College Basketball Hall of Fame—what an incredible legacy for someone from little Larned, KS!

In 1958, Gene Keady was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers but never played professional football due to a knee injury. Back home in Kansas, Gene accepted a teaching and coaching position at Beloit Junior-Senior High School, where the only open coaching role was for basketball.
After six years at Beloit, Gene moved to the college level, coaching at Hutchinson Community College (9 years), the University of Arkansas (3 years), Western Kentucky University (3 years), and Purdue University, where he spent an amazing 25 years leading the Boilermakers.

Before his legendary coaching career, Gene Keady was an all-sports star at Larned High School, graduating in 1954. He carried that talent to Garden City Community College, where he competed in four sports, and then to Kansas State University, where he lettered in football, baseball, and track!
Fun fact: Gene always said baseball was his best sport! ⚾
